Hawaiian Pizza

Hawaiian Pizza

In the winter of 2017, a controversy around Hawaiian pizza erupted online and many people weighed in on whether or not pineapple should be a pizza topping (you know this is a serious matter when the Canadian Prime Minister weighs in on the subject). Jeff and I are definitely on #TeamPineapple! Whenever we order Domino’s (which is more often than we’d like of admit), an Hawaiian pizza is always part of the order, it’s just so good! We often make it at home too and today we share with you this delicious recipe! We challenge you to try this pizza at least once before you side with the President of Iceland in his quest to ban pineapple as a pizza topping!

Dust your counter-top with flour to prevent the dough from sticking. Spread the dough with your fingers or use a rolling pin. Leave the overhead toss to the experts ;)  Keep an eye out for our dough recipe which we will be posting soon.

While the oven is heating up to temperature, prepare your toppings. Remember to leave your cast iron in the oven while it preheats - you want it to get hot! A hotter pan means a crispier crust. Once hot, transfer the dough to the cast-iron pan.

Put a spoonful of tomato sauce on the dough and spread it around using the back of the spoon.

Add the grated mozzarella, pineapple and ham!   Cook at 500 °C for about 10-12 minutes until the cheese is browned and bubbly and the bottom of the pizza is golden! If the weather is nice, or if you’re feeling ambitious, you can cook this on the barbecue instead

  • One 12 inch pizza
  • 15 minutes
  • 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 12 in pizza dough (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • 50-60 g deli ham
  • 1/4 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/3 cup chunk pineapple (canned or fresh)

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to the highest possible temperature (around 500 °F) and place your cast iron pan in the oven to warm it up
  2. Dust your working surface with flour
  3. Spread the dough to about 12 inches in diameter
  4. Slice the ham in ~1/2 in squares
  5. Drain the can of pineapple chunks, save half for a healthy snack later in the week
  6. Cut the pineapple chunks in 1/2 in squares or to the size of topping you like
  7. When the oven is ready, take the cast iron out and place it on stove element which has been turned on (this will keep your pan hot)
  8. Transfer the dough to the cast iron pan and make sure it fills the pan, make adjustments if needed
  9. Grab a spoonful of tomato sauce and spread it around using the back of the spoon, repeat until you have the desired amount of tomato sauce on the pizza (~1/4 cup)
  10. Add the toppings in this order: cheese, pineapple and ham.
  11. Cook the pizza until the cheese is slightly brown and bubbly and the bottom of the pizza is browned (~10-12 minutes, keep a close eye on the pizza as it cooks)
  12. Enjoy!
